December 2015 Happy Winter Holidays!

Dear Students, Parents, Guardians & Families,

This December 2nd and 3rd graders worked on Still Life art.  Kindergarten and 1st graders created seasonal projects.  Fourth and fifth graders worked on special effects with water color, reviews of new art vocabulary words and artist statements.  All students completed clay projects and learned about the 'real mud clay' process.  Our hand-built clay pots and artifacts are for decorative uses only.  We do not use glazes.  I have fired all real clay art one time.  That is called bisque ware.  Students did a good job with pattern and color decorations using various art room materials that are student friendly and safe.  Part of learning about the clay process is understanding that fired, finished clay art is breakable.  Sometimes clay art cracks in the kiln or in the drying or cooling process.  Students who did not complete a clay piece will get to make-up these lessons in 2016.

Clay Projects In Progress: Plan how you will carry it home!

First we research, sketch, plan and revise. Next - hand-building, drying, firing in the kiln.
After our clay projects are fired we will paint and gloss them.  They should be ready by Dec. 14th.
PLAN HOW YOU WILL CARRY YOUR CLAY PROJECT HOME SAFELY!

We Salute Our Veterans

Our first art and music presentation was very successful!  We are proud to salute the veterans of our community for Veterans Day 2015.  We hope you will visit our displays in the hallways.  Our veterans display will be up until the Winter Holidays.   The 5th graders made us very proud with their achievements in the arts!

All students will create clay projects before the Winter Break.  Please remember that our clay projects are for indoor decorative uses only.  It is a good idea for students to wear clothes that they are not worried about on art class day.  We may get a little messy during our creative and fun activities.

Friday, August 28, 2015

Welcome to Art Class!  All students are creating self-portraits and/or family portraits.  Upper elementary grades are focusing on drawing from careful observation.  Pre-K through 2nd graders are creating portraits from imagination, from memory and sometimes from observation.  We all study museum masterpieces.  Sometimes we get a little messy having fun in art.  It is a good idea to wear clothes that we don't have to worry about on art class day.

I am looking forward to a fabulously creative 2015-16 school term.

Art Awards!

Our students had lots of wonderful opportunities to show off their achievements in the visual arts this year.  Our latest honors go to Lucy Maxwell and Kate Sherwood.  Lucy's art was selected from the Annual Youth Art Exhibit at Longwood Center for the Visual Arts to represent our school next term in the Highlights exhibit at Longwood University.  Kate's response to a survey about art and leadership was published in the Spring 2015 VAEA.org newsletter. VAEA Spring 2015 Newsletter

Weaving & Yarn Designs. Weaving shows the beginning of binary code and computers!

Some students choose to create a yarn design inspired by Mexican Art instead of weaving.
After learning how to weave in class, some students went on to independently create their own loom and woven art.
Finished cloth!  What can we use it for?
Wow!  A really big yarn design showing good craftsmanship.
