My Professional Philosophy
I
teach studio art classes. I love the
interactions that take place in this art setting. We discover, create and learn from each
other. We think through art. One of the greatest pleasures of my job is learning
from and enjoying the amazing things that my students come up with. My approach is based on the Studio Thinking
Project. This project researched and
documented studio habits of mind that were already happening in art
classes. This was done in order to help
explain and assess what kind of learning is happening in studio art classes and
how this learning might be transferring to other subjects like math and
language arts. This is a skills and
project based model, grounded in real world examples. My classes often take virtual trips to
museums and listen to artist statements by local and international masters. As teachers we are guided by state standards
and curriculum guides, but we like having some flexibility and choice. So do students. Therefore I incorporate modified aspects of
the Choice and Comfort based teaching models.
I encourage expressions of personal interests and I encourage
mistakes! Our favorite classroom book is
Beautiful Oops by Barney Salzburg. I
also encourage individual and collaborative reflection by sharing, exhibiting
and writing about our art and the creative process.
