DRAWING FROM CAREFUL OBSERVATION starts in first grade.  We put the A  into S.T.E.M.  for S.T.E.A.M.  We know that artists, along with scientists, engineers, inventors and others, use many of the same thinking skills.  In art class we practice learning to look, to wonder, to find details, analyze, and figure things out.  We use drawing tools, technology and other tools.  Sometimes we invent tools!

DRAWING AND PAINTING FROM IMAGINATION is also important for all grades in art class.  Kindergarten students created paintings with invented tools and their imaginations.

SHARING AND TALKING ABOUT OUR WORK AT SCHOOL

We have been exploring ways to reflect, share and think about our work.  Here is a link showing one way that we can use technology to do this.

https://www.smore.com/app/pages/preview/7eef

We also use artist statements, slideshows and collaborations with other classes and other teachers.  Stay tuned for more about how we share our thoughts and develop the Lifelong Learner skill of  evaluating our own work.

Don't forget to visit the Visual Arts Festival and see our impressive student work at Fashion Square Mall (before the 17th) and at CitySpace on the downtown Charlottesville mall before March 25th!  (If you scroll down you will see my post of student participants).  Here is a link with more information.

All third grade art students did a great job on The Dome Hat Challenge, inspired by the art and architecture of Ancient Rome.

Please visit the ACPS Visual Arts Festival at Fashion Square Mall from March 2nd to March 16th, 2014.  I have posted a list of students exhibiting art to represent Scottsville and Broadus Wood Elementary Schools.  At the CitySpace exhibit on the downtown Charlottesville mall, we have Nate Greco and Jill Collier representing Broadus Wood.  We have Megan Cersley and Kylie Wilson representing Scottsville with their art work at CitySpace.  The CitySpace exhibit ends on March 25th.  At CitySpace you can vote for art to be included in the ACPS 2014-15 calendar.
